I don't necessarily care for the labelmaker-esque use of white backgrounds on all of the image text, but its certainly a better layout.

I agree. I think a scroll-over caption would benefit the clean layout/design.

I actually hate the instagram type scrolling photo design. Nbcnews.com just redid their website and it is miserable. Topics like sports and world are no longer grouped together, instead spread sporadically throughout the page. Sometimes having an order to read articles is the easiest. I'm not saying Gawker did it right (they didn't) but having some order isn't a bad thing.
